Wilderness First Aid

WMI is part of NOLS and provides an excellent course.  I took their WAFA course about 12 years ago, through another source not REI.  They were very thorough and professional.

In the SF Bay Area Bobbie Foster offers an excellent WFA class; Bobbie is
highly professional and friendly.

I learned a lot at a NOLS WFA class hosted by REI. No complaints.

My buddy and I are taking one next week.

Check out SOLO as well. Little cheaper than NOLS. I took the WUMP class through SOLO Southeast a few years ago and it was excellent.

I taught Wilderness Advanced First Aid courses in 1980s and two things we did that students really appreciated were:

• have students come with their pack packed for a trip and examine how the non-FA gear they have could be used in FA situations and
• have realistic practical sessions / exams with volunteers in make-up and briefed on their signs and symptoms.  We’d have some screamers, some quiet people, some obvious signs, some information like diabetes only given if asked, some symptoms like pain in a limb only triggered if palpated, and a guy hidden behind a bush quietly dying if no one thought to look all around at the bigger scene.

I ended up getting  into one of these classes with REI, its next weekend.  I’ll report back

Highly informative course!  I definitely recommend taking it.  Its money well spent for anyone that spends a lot of time in the backcountry.

If you ever feel the urge to do something more extensive, I did the NOLS/WMI First Responder course.   It greatly exceeded my expectations, because about half of it involved simulated field scenarios, which were extremely well arranged.

The Sierra Club Angeles Chapter offers WFA a couple times a year for very little money.

I took it with Wilderness Medical Associates and thought it was excellent. They used the Outward Bound book. I helps to read the book in advance. A lot of info is dumped on you in 24 hours of class time.
