Jan (or whomever from Nunatak posted),
Thanks so much for pointing out that I had the wrong link and that you now have a wide-footbox version available. I was not aware of the 30″ footbox option.
For reference, the interior dimensions of the footbox on our Love Bird Quilt are 32″ by 7″, rectangular. So the interior circumference is 78″. We are able to arrange our legs and feet even when both of us are sleeping on our backs.
I’ve given some thought to this and I have a theory that may or may not hold water… Maybe the narrow footbox works for couples when one person is a side-sleeper and so never extends the feet down into the footbox? My brother purchased one of your older narrow-footbox Dual Arcs. He and his wife tried to spend the night in it in their living room and concluded “no way, we don’t fit”. So he offered it to Jim and me. We tried it for a night and had the same experience. Neither of us could get comfortable enough to sleep with all four feet stuffed into the little footbox. Then Manfred K and his wife took it on a local 2-night hike. They aborted their trip and returned home on the second day because they couldn’t get any sleep the first night. Alan Dixon and his wife tried it in our living room, but they rejected it before taking it into the field. Finally, Danny Milks and his wife tried it, with an infant sleeping between them no less, and they LOVED it. They had no problem at all with the footbox. So they are now the proud owners of a Nunatak Dual Arc.
In any case, Nunatak makes fantastic high quality gear, and the offer of the 30″ footbox makes the dual arc a viable option. When I write our gear-list article and list the commercially available double-quilts, I will add a recommendation about the importance of getting the right size footbox. People can easily take an old blanket and baste a footbox of various sizes in order to see what width they need for their own sleeping style. A narrow footbox is clearly warmer for its weight, so no reason to get a wider footbox if it’s not needed. On the other hand, based on my random sampling of five couples, a narrow footbox is a non-starter for a significant number of people.
Thanks again for the info, Amy
p.s. Thanks to d.k. for the links.
