Going December 6-13 2020 and trying to decide between my Arcteryx Alpha FL and my Mountain Hardwear Supercharger. Here’s the route, it will include a day on the North Rim and wondering if I really get extra warmth out of a thicker shell.

I eschew Mt’n. Hardwear anything.
That leaves Dead Bird, always quality gear if a tad pricey.
I try not to use my raincoats as warm layers since the DWR wears off fairly fast.

Sorry – I should have been more specific. My warmth will come from several layers including a Capilene Air and Down Hoodie. The Shell is just meant to do what shells do, keep out the elements and trap the heat. The Supercharger is a thin flexible very light weight jacket, the Alpha FL is thicker and heavier.. Not sure if I’m gaining much though by bringing it. Here’s my complete list:
Unless the forecast is super stormy I’d bring the lighter shell.
Honestly, if you have a stable forecast I’d be tempted to bring a more air resistant windshirt and leave the WPB at home.
Nothing gained other than durability. Given the time of year and location, I’d probably opt for the Alpha. This is under the assumption that it will be treated as a windbreaker too.
