Hello Everybody,

I am trying to decide on a puffy jacket to extend the warmth of my 20° EE Revelation. I will be taking it on an upcoming trip to the Peruvian Andes where the nighttime temps may drop down to the low teens. I will also be taking it on the Colorado trail in August.

The two jackets I am considering are the Montbell Ex Light Down Anorak and the Montbell Superior down Parka.

Would you consider one over the other in the capacity that I mentioned?

thanks

Montbell rates them as the same warmth. The Ex Light has slightly less down but higher fill power. It also costs more and has a lighter shell.

Lower fill power could be more resistant to moisture but otherwise it’s a simple comparison of weight vs price.

Hey Paul, thanks for the reply. I couldn’t seem to find the warmth rating on the montbell website. I think I am going to go for the ex Light for the 2.5oz weight savings.

Thanks again

I have the superior parka and the alpine light.. I chose the superior over the anorak just because I like the larger baffles and the fabric felt too fragile on the anorak.  Im also a fan of having a full zip to vent without taking it completely off if needed.

I love my alpine light but had to return the first one after a week due to some stitching coming undone and down leaking out due to what looked like them cutting the fabric too short before sewing (return was hassle-free and they just gave me a new one).  I am having the same issue on the second one that happened about a month later in an area where it is double stitched so no down is leaking but is still annoying to me.

I have an alpine light. Just too good a value and can be used in a wide range especially when stacked over another garment.

For sleeping in I would take a pullover as a matter of course rather than one with a zipper if that was an available option. But for sleeping in I always add a crutch strap to stop the garment from riding up during my nightly thrashing around. Make sure your windproof layer fits over the sleeping layer down just as added insurance

I can’t speak for the Andes but the Colorado Trail in August  will probably have you using a down jacket as a pillow far more than wearing it with a 20* quilt.   For that, you may as well chose the lightest option.  I have the Mont Bell Anorak and use it with my EE quilt as you plan to do, it makes for a great sleep system in cooler weather. I just don’t think you’ll use it that way in August much, if at all.

Thanks for all the great info everybody. I pulled the trigger on the ex Light Anorak… I think it will make a great layer for my sleep system on my trip to Peru, and shoulder season hiking in the States. For $269 it better make a comfy summertime pillow too.
