Hello, looking for a place to buy woven or knit polyesters specifically for clothing.  Needless to say, this would be for backpacking related clothing.  I’m interested in making a button up woven sun hoodie (or a knit one, with buttons) so things like known UPF would be handy, as well as some colors and patterns.

The forum seems broken today. First posts are not showing. Maybe repeat your question.

RSBTR carries both woven and knit (fleece) polyester, as do almost all fabric suppliers.

Fabricdirect1 sells seconds on Etsy. Often including extra fabrics according to reviews and my own personal experience. Unfortunately they’re temporarily closed due to ” family emergency”.

I noticed that too about the first post, but I’m seeing them now.  I haven’t had much luck at my local fabric store but I’ll check their website again, maybe I missed something.  I was wondering if anyone made their own backpacking cloths has a good source.

Most of the usual places have woven polyester and fleece: RipStopByTheRoll, Disovery Fabrics, Seattle Fabrics, Quest, Rocky Woods. The Etsy shop that Terran mentioned usually has Alpha Direct in stock (when they are open). Grid and plain fleece are more common.

Polartec Power Dry Lightweight is similar to OR Echo. Discovery stocks it.

If you are looking for something similar to CoolMax, then I have not seen that at the tech fabric shops. I would expect it to be available somewhere — perhaps a mainstream shop like Wawak? They might know if you ask them. They are very helpful.

Why do you want polyester?

I’ve been fooling around, trying to get hydrophobic or hydrophilic polyester.

I got some polyester from Amazon.  That was very hydrophilic – a drop of water on the surface does not bead up, but gets absorbed into the threads.  I used it in hot weather and it was about as comfortable as a nylon (supplex) shirt, except the polyester started to fray.  The supplex is good for a long time

Maybe I’ll try a hydrophobic shirt, but I have a polypropylene shirt which is hydrophobic, so maybe I’ll just try it someore.

My polypropylene shirt is black so not good in heat.

I think that if you hold fabric to bright light you can get a pretty good idea if it’s sun proof.  If the holes between threads are small, it’s probably sun proof. If it’s a loose weave then not so good.

The first post bug is almost fixed

You can read the message but the avatar and name are written over each other.

OR Echo was one of the fabric types I was looking at, I will check that out.  Thanks!

Thanks everyone.  I wasn’t looking for polyester in particular other than some of the shirts I like are nylon polyester blends, so that seemed like a good starting point.

I got Polartec Delta from FabricDirect1 for half price. Polyester/rayon, I believe.  Using different threads, not a blend. Nice fabric. Depends what you’re looking for.
