I have looked at my paid time off this year and realize I can get the longest chunk off if I take off the last two weeks of November. The problem is that in the US days are short and nights are cold.

Has anyone done a cool backpacking trip around this time in the US or elsewhere? I don’t mind paying to fly somewhere, but don’t want to do anything that requires tons of planning…. I would like to be able to plan on the fly other than downloading maps etc. I’ve hiked the CDT and PCT so I’m not a beginner.

+1 Arizona.  Summer is usually the wettest season, but sometimes the monsoon rains (remnants of Pacific hurricanes) last into October. Water-wise,  I’ve been drenched before in a few Octobers in AZ , but also once experienced drought (though someone in this board said there was water later in November)

If you’ve got the $, New Zealand.  Fly into Christchurch, take the bus or train to Arthur’s Pass, hike the TA or another another route south, catch the bus and/or hitch back to Christchurch depending on how far you get.

Grand Canyon is great in late Nov but nights are still long and permits require at least a bit of advanced planning.

I’ll put in my vote for Pategonia.  It will be early in the season down there, but both Torres del Paine and Los Glaciares are unbelievable.  You can hike the full circuit in Torres del Paine with very little planning (besides booking a flight).  It won’t be a full wilderness experience, as there are refugios along the way, but it is certainly spectacular.
