What’s your favorite sun/bug shirt?

About 12 years ago I got 3 ExOfficio Dryflylite shirts on clearance at REI.  They have been my backpacking standby ever since.  I prefer sleeves to sunscreen and deet.  The shirts were light and durable and fit perfectly.  But they are showing their age and I am ready to replace them.  Sadly, ExO no longer makes these.  Their Lightscape shirt is supposed to be the replacement so I ordered that.  Alas, the cut is different, and is for someone much bustier than I am.  So, looking for alternatives.  Button-down, collar, well-ventilated, pockets that close and don’t hurt under pack straps.

REI Sahara is close but the fabric is bulkier.  Columbia Silver Ridge is lighter but the fabric feels like plastic on my skin.  ExO bugsaway is bulkier, and I don’t trust that their cut is any better than the Lightscape.   Poking around REI.com doesn’t turn up much else lightweight in a button-down.  Willing to give up my employee discount to find something I really like.

So, any other ideas?  Smaller manufacturers?  Non-outdoors-industry sources?  (I am not much of a clothing shopper so generally ignorant of the broader market.)

Not a button down, but I fell in love with Patagonia Tropic Comfort Hoody II after seeing Craig’s (I also don’t wear deet or sunscreen, except on my nose for the sunscreen). I sent it in for permethrin treatment for the bugs. It’s light, comfortable, and certainly seems durable so far (doesn’t show signs of wear after multiple trips). Unlike a button down with hat, the hood keeps bugs off your neck as well.

The Columbia Featherweight Hike II Shirt is uh-may-zing!  A couple of oz.  Dries fast.  Lightweight, wicking, and breathable.  I love this shirt….  They look like they’ve been discontinued though.  :(

Mina, check out the Patagonia Sun Stretch shirt–I find it more comfortable in the sun than my ExOfficio Halo Check Bugsaway shirt which became a sweat bag. A new one is expensive, but you can often find them (women’s and men’s versions) on eBay for $20-40. Then send it to InsectShield for permethrin treatment.

Columbia silver ridge for hiking or Patagonia long sleeve cool capiline spf for running. I buy the mens, higher neck.

Thanks for all the suggestions!  I am a size S in most brands.  I used to be a size M but the sizes have been changing in the last few years.

One reason I like a button-down is that in hot weather in addition to buttoning up the sleeves I can also undo the lower buttons and tie the tail up in the front in hot weather.  I’ve read for years about the Railriders shirts being great but in women’s they only have a pullover with a half placket of buttons.

I’ll take a look at some of the others.   Might be I can’t have everything I want–ventilation, light weight (worn out shirts are 2.4 oz), buttons, etc. But wait!  I am am American Consumer!  I get to have everything just like I want it, right?  What gives?

Mina, I wear the fishing shirt. I’m not skinny, but I’m short. I wear a small and it’s very large on me. They have a woman’s version, too, but I have a men’s version.

Another option that works pretty well is to just buy a men’s shirt made of cotton-poly blend. The only thing I don’t like about them is they lack adequate pockets, but otherwise they work pretty well. And if it’s really thin, 100% cotton works too. This is something Paul Mags recommends as a cheaper option and it works great. I’ve gotten some from the thrift store and from my boyfriend’s closet.

What would people think about the OR Echo Hoody, too thin?

It works well for me for sun protection; mosquitoes can bite through it though.

Thanks.  I will probably go with a 50/50 long sleeved thin dress shirt then.  Everything else looks pretty non-breathable.

I just recently bought a used Patagonia Airshed to try for that purpose… I’ve heard a lot of people say it’s very breathable so I’m hoping it doesn’t turn into a sauna.

+1 for the Patagonia Sun Stretch Shirt (in a light color if using in the sun)  plus Insect Shield Treatment

I have been using a  OR Echo Crew-neck long sleeve shirt for several years. It is outstanding in hot/sunny weather. As for being bug proof…the mosquitos can still get you!

The Columbia Silver Ridge light has been very nice for me it stays cool dries quickly and provides sun protection.   I also have the Patagonia Men’s Tropic Comfort Hoody, its also nice, but the Silver Ridge shirt stays cooler in my opinion.
