Looking to add warmth to my Nemo Tensor Elite MW pad.

The Elite hovers at 45-40F comfort limit. You could push it to 30F but it won’t be a blissful night.

So.

There are Aliexpress, GG, Yamatomichi, and Oware pads out there that range from 0.5 to 4 R-values. Adding a superlight torso-length foam mat would dramatically increase the pad’s range and may just push it into 20F or lower. The key is a blissful night. Hoping to pair with an EE Enigma 30 or ideally, an HMG 40 bag.

Any ideas? Links to other awesome pads in this range?

Supposedly, this stuff is R3.o, at least when used vertically against a metal building wall, and not compressed by your bodyweight.

Nice thing is, it’s cheap, and you’ll have plenty of material to play with size, shape etc… Very lightweight, if bulky however… That said, a torso-length cut to 20″ wide should roll up nicely inside your pack, and double as a decent sit-pad if you please.

I’ve used these full-length under my pads, and have had good luck with them.

These thin CCF pads punch above their weight in terms of R-value. I use GG thinlight and Yamatomichi pads (1/4″) and regularly use my Nemo Tensor Elite in temps around freezing, with no issues.

Ryan, do you find Yamatomochi pad noticeably warmer? Which of the two pads do you prefer?

In a small test, i’ve used a 1/4″ pad by itself down to 26′ with a 10′ quilt. Not unbearably cold. Using 3 of the pads stacked up, a little over a 3 R value I felt plenty warm. The women who were in a separate group didn’t fair so well feeling cold with two pads, though some group thinking may have came into play. The point being yes, those pads do pack a punch.

I’ve been using an Exped mat which has an 3D egg carton pattern with a Thermarest as well as a Zen Bivy mat. This allows me to air them down for comfort. I’m 200 pounds. They bottom out otherwise. It’s not necessary with my Nemo which is a little thicker.

Gary – I think the two pads are probably so thin that you won’t notice any difference in warmth. But the GG Thinlight is made with much higher-density foam than the Yamotomichi Minimalist. That makes it heavier, but more durable. The Minimalist gives you more comfort (thickness) per weight. But again, these are thin pads so I don’t pay too much attention to R-value or comfort unless we’re talking about foam pads that are in the 10-15mm thickness range. The real goal of the two-pad system here is to stop heat from leaving the inflatable on top of it.

Ahh, this is super helpful. Been trying to figure out the difference, good to know it’s minutia. Have you tried the Oware pads and Insul-mat Aerogel pad from a while back? You just may remember that one? Just found it in my basement and thought it had an hour Rvalue of 5-8 for a 0.25” pad that’s at 4oz if you cut it.

very curious about the Oware 1/4” pad
