What width foam pad under 25 in. inflatable sleep pad?

Puncture protection: 25 x 72 foam pad is safest bet. Or you can go smaller, but spend time picking sharp stuff out of campsites.

Extra insulation: Hard to say, but 25 x 72 is safest bet, especially in winter.

Backup: How much do you “require” a long, wide pad under hopefully rare conditions? Plus you can adapt by putting your empty backpack and extra clothing (if any) under a shorter pad, or you can choose campsites with more natural insulation like leaves.

I’ve never punctured an inflatable pad, but I’m choosy about campsites and pick out sharp stuff before setting up camp. I carry multi-purpose patch tape anyway. I also pack an R 4.8 inflatable pad, so don’t need extra insulation.

I asked a similar question a few weeks ago, and got the recommendations to check Oware and MLD.  Both offer 1/8″ and/or 1/4″ pads that are 40″ side. Gossamer Gear has the same, but I think the wide is out of stock.  MLD has one is 40″ x 80″, and they don’t do custom, so you can cut it as you like.  I also found out exped has a 25″ wide like a z-rest.  And for a little more weight and bulk there is a Thermarest Ridgerest Large.

Just want to add that Exped pad is 2.2 R making it a good addition for winter use.
