When I was 28 (1972) I went on a 10 day backpack in Washington’s Pasayten Wilderness with my wife-to-be Laura.  I was carrying 70+ lbs (skin out weight).  (9 lb tent, 5 pound inflatable boat, fishing gear, 5 lb boots, 5 lb pack, 5 lb sleeping bag,  ice axe, liquid fuel stove, food, etc.)

If I could still carry that weight (I can’t) with my newer lighter gear I could easily carry enough food to backpack for a month without resupplying.

Laura and I still backpack (now 77) but I try to  keep my skin-out weight below 30 lbs.

Yeah, UL gear and techniques have kept our family (had young kids as an older adult) and then me on the trail.

I was early to UL – did a 9-day trip in the mid 1980s starting with a 29-pound pack (including food, but no fuel as I was going no-cook).  My base weight is now half as much.

If I’d had modern gear and skills back then, I’d have done longer trips and always traveled with more functional clothing which would have avoided a few hypothermic episodes.

Is that a photo of Roman and his son? Such a sad story, still. There’s some nostalgia. And it brings back memories for me of Rocky Reifenstuhl who was friend (and competitor) of Roman. I guess that’s the thing about remembering those old times; they make us happy and sad at once.
