3”-3.5” folding lock blade knife  and a match safe with compass carried away from the other iron bits.

A “survival keyring” with:

  • SAK Classic knife
  • fire steel
  • spy capsule with tinder
  • aaa led flashlight
  • whistle

It’s just enough for making fire, signaling maybe improvising shelter, and navigating  I use some it regularly too.

Scenarios? Losing your pack in a stream crossing or over a cliff, a bear drags it off, or a two legged snake steals it.

Also, I’m pretty blind without my glasses/contacts, so in my hiking shorts/pants I have a side zippered pocket that I always keep a second pair of glasses in a microfiber case with a whistle on the lanyard.

Thanks. That reminds me that I keep putting off buying a spare. Five years ago, I could have managed without them, but now I need a backup.

This has gotten me thinking. But for now, I’ll be honest and say that the only thing that is always on my person is one of my PLB’s and that’s about it.

Having lived through a real-life scenario in which I survived a 70 ft fall when the ground gave way beneath me, I think I will start keeping my Iridium Extreme on me as well. That plus my PLB should have me covered in the event a similar event was to happen again.
