I have read this term in reference to some tents offering the ability to porch the tent door or vestibule. I am imagining the vestibule coming out almost horizontal to provide rain cover but still allow air flow. But that is just a guess.

Yep. You got it.
Porch mode is very popular with hammocks. If the rain/wind is light, you can prop one side of the tarp up with sticks or tie off to other trees and sit back in your ripstop barcalounger while the coffee brews and watch the fish jumping in the lake. Sigh….. is that a loon I hear?
