Is all soft-shell material equal? i.e. windproofness, “softness”, stretchiness.

Well…blush…I wear an old pair of REI 100% nylon pants. They’re impervious to wind. I can sit down on snow and not get a wet butt. If it starts raining, no worries. Warm. Cheap and last forever.

+1 on the REI Activator. For me they are that rare piece of gear that just works and I don’t think about. With one exception – the waist is a little baggy relative to the cut of the legs, so I need to tuck a couple layers in, or consider a belt or suspenders. Don’t like belts though…

They even make for a decent sleep layer, very comfy.
