Wanted to go in July which is when I can. “Sold out” but they do have permits for starting in the middle which I dont want to. Argh!

You could try your luck and just show up, hoping for a cancellation. It’s not unusual for people to change plans or decide after a day or two that the trail isn’t for them.
He lives in Atlanta Georgia, that would be a long way(over 2800 miles) to go to find out he can’t end up getting a permit.
