I have an old nylon jacket that gets ab/used for bushbashing either as protection for me or the lightweight raincoat underneath it. The nylon fabric used in the jacket has no coating so has never been waterproof, but I’m looking at whether it is worthwhile to apply some sort of waterproofing to the jacket.

The two products I’ve seen are Nikwax Tent and Gear Solarproof and Nikwax TX Direct Water Repellency Spray. The solarproof seems to a waterproofing spray while the TX Direct seems more of a DWR coating for WPB coats, which the old jacket definitely isn’t.

Has anyone had experience with these products and/or suggest something better?

nikwax DWR applications wont last as long as grangers/reviveX (flurocarbon)

how is the face fabric? … is it rough from use and abuse?

if so it probably isnt worth trying to DWR it …

I would suggest trying thinned silicone adhesive, and try the weight ratio that Richard N. talked about, maybe a little thinner so it’s more breathable. The ratio he came up with and recommends, is for re-waterproofing silicone treated fabrics like silnylon so it may not be ideal for breathability, which is why thinner might be better.

It is inexpensive, and relatively easy to do.  Provides a more long lasting DWR than any of the other ones, only because it’s a much thicker coating than the other ones.  Needs to be occasionally well rinsed, and once in a while, washed and degreased to revive the DWR properties.

If you do try this route, make sure the jacket is very well cleansed and more over, very well rinsed of any residues.  It’s important to pre rinse one’s washer with hot water a couple of times to help with this.
