I’ve spent much of the first three months of this pandemic hanging in a hammock in my backyard under an old Hennessy Hammock 70d Polyurethane Hex Tarp.

We have now hit the time of year where it’s too hot out to enjoy the backyard and I’d like to put the tarp away but it’s got a fair amount of bird poop on it. It’s not blasting off easily with a hose so I’m thinking about removing all the guy lines and throwing it into a front loading washing machine. Is that a bad idea?

I haven’t used this tarp for camping in years and it’s too heavy for backpacking so I’m not too worried about it if something happens to the tarp in the washer…

Hey Matthew, For a first step I’d suggest using a kitchen sponge with some warm, soapy water (dish soap or Dr. Bronner’s), with the idea that light rubbing with a sponge might remove what can’t be blasted off with water alone, but still not be too abrasive. I’ve done this for spot treatment on bird poop.

Another option could be to fill your bathtub with soapy water and let it sit in it for 30 minutes or so, then take it outside and rinse it off with the hose.

Bad idea! I recently started a thread on how I removed and recoated my PU pyramid. I put it in a washing machine because I knew it would remove most of the coating, which it did.
