warmth of new Patagonia DAS parka?

My Das Parka is quite a few years old. You might want to see if you can find any info on whether that makes it warmer or colder than the current version.

I’d say mine is about as warm as an equivalent thickness down parka, so around 5 or 6 oz of 850FP in a M size. It’s is certainly warmer than the ultralight down sweaters with 2-3 oz of fill, but definitely less than the big gun parkas with 8 oz or more in a M.

That said, it does a bit better in some respects:

• no cold spots, which many mid weight down parkas have in the shoulders etc.
• more wind resistant, due to fewer seams and an extra hanging inner liner.

It’s hard for me to compare, becasue I am quite tall and quite skinny.

My DAS parka is XL, to give me long enough sleeves., and it’s cut super baggy to fit over mid and shell layers for belaying, That means it fits about two of me, width wise, which reduces warmth. My down parka is a custom GooseFeet, that fits only over very trim layers.

I would just say, put it next to your down jackets and compare loft, then consider whether any other features (box baffles vs sewn through, more or fewer seams, windproof fabrics, etc) make a difference.

Looking at the Pictures of the new one, it seems about the same thickness.

It does add features to boost warmth, like Pertex Pro outer, and far fewer seams, so in high winds, and wet condtions, I would expect the new one to be quite a bit warmer.

Thickness looks about the same, (same weight of fill) but perhaps the new insulation is a touch warmer/gram than the old version.

And here, here is wearing it with just jeans and bare hands, nothing on his neck. To me that says: midweight jacket. If something is a true deep winter parka, your legs and hands should be freezing, or you’d be unzipping it:

He says it’s warmer than the Fitzroy. I think the current Fitzroy is 4.5 oz of 800FP?

my down parka doesn’t have a lot of wind resistance, so the DAS would trump that- also in wetter conditions a better choice
