Hello,

I just started using a hammock as a shelter and the with a 35 degree sleeping bag I was very cold in low 40s weather. Are there any super light weight options that I can take to give me good insulation and warmth at night? A fleece or something?

You can’t lay on top of the sleeping bag, it gets compressed and is practically useless on the bottom for insulation value. If the sleeping bag has a zipper that will allow you to pass the end of the hammock through it, you can use it as a “cacoon” to completely surround yourself.

I use an under quilt and a top quilt to prevent the compression of the insulation and for additional flexibility.

Yeah I have a sleeping pad underneath and I sleep inside the bag. Good point on the compression. Any suggestions on lightweight quilts?

I have both top quilt and under quilts from Enlightened Equipment, there are literally dozens of brands to choose from. I have been very satisfied with the quality, performance, and weight of the down quilts I bought from EE. Enough so that I have purchased both a top and under quilt for my wife too.

I am using a Revolt under quilt and an Enigma top quilt, both 40 degree for myself and a 40 degree under quilt and 30 degree top quilt for my wife.

Certainly not inexpensive but whenever I try to buy something bargain I end up selling it at a loss to buy what I wanted in the first place. Unfortunately, this quilt episode was one of those experiences too. I figure with reasonable care, they will outlast me.

You can use a sleeping bag in a hammock.  Regardless of whether you use a sleeping bag or a top quilt inside the hammock, you still need either a sufficiently warm pad or underquilt underneath you.

How warm is your pad?  Do you think the 35 degree rating on your bag is accurate?

You might post this in the Hammock forum.

I tried sleeping bag with closed cell foam pad and couldn’t keep the pad underneath me in the hammock.  An underquilt/quilt combo is so much easier.

Hammock Gear has an Econ line of quality, albeit heavier, underquilts. Or a lighter premium line, if you decide to spend more. I went with them over EE because of the lack of end baffles. Never tried EE, but I’m happy with HG.

@rpjr,

Yeah I agree, I do need a bag and something below. I am actually not sure what the rating is on the pad. The brand is <span id=”productTitle” class=”a-size-large” style=”color: #000000;”>Therm-a-Rest RidgeRest. I think the bag is actually what they claim it is. </span>
