Warm booties for glacier base camp

Hey all,

I’m going to be spending a couple weeks base camping on a glacier this summer. It likely won’t be too cold (hopefully lows in the high 30s), but given the duration I’d like to be able to wear something other than my boots while hunkering down during storms, etc. I have a pair of WM down booties for camping in the real cold, but they take up an awful lot of space in my already cramped pack (no skis/pulks on this trip). Any suggestions for low-volume alternatives that are still insulated enough to use on a glacier? I don’t really want to shell out for a pair of the WM Flash booties… seems like too much overlap with what I already have for 90% of my needs.

Thanks in advance!
Emmett

Take a look at the 40 Below Camp Booties OR Forty Below Light Energy Shorty overboots. If you want more warmth add heavier wool sock on your feet as 40 Below Camp Booties have removable Closed Cell foam footbed for enhanced insulation under feet.

Wow… great suggestions! I think I’ve got what I need. Appreciate all the quick input!!

@kenlarson
– I think the 40 below booties are pretty similar to my WM booties, but the light energy ones are pretty nifty! A bit pricey for my needs on this trip since I’d have to size down in order to wear without my boots, but I’m going to keep them in mind for the future. Thanks!

@jringeorgia
– Whoa… those look like just the ticket! I have one of Ben’s pillowcases and think it’s pretty fantastic. Didn’t realize he made this cool pairing. And I’ll bet if I throw on both pairs of wool socks I could use the overboots by themselves without the down socks – that would really fit my immediate need. Thank you!

@moondog55
– Yeah, that’s exactly what I was envisioning, but I’m struggling with the sheer volume that Crocs take up. I really want to keep them in my pack due to the severe alders and devil’s club we’re going to bushwack through in AK (should have mentioned that), and given the length of the trip even my big expedition pack is already busting at the seams. Thanks though… right in line with what I wanted!

These camp shoes from Montbell also pack down quite well, barely bigger than just shells for down booties, and could work well for you on a glacier if you added a foam footbed to them. And they’re pretty cheap.

How about cutting soles out of 1/2 or 3/4″ CCF (like stiffer “ensolite” sleeping pads)?  Use some contact cement to double their thickness and/or add a stiffer layer.  Then add a few straps (think Roman sandals). You could have really high R-value from the ground plus whatever warmth your bulkiest socks provide.

In a pinch, you could deal with rain and high winds by putting bread bags (the plastic bags that come around loafs of bread) over your socks and then strapping on the sandals.  Or, sturdier would be a square of sil-nylon laid on top of the sandals, wrapped over your socks, tucked into the top of the socks and then secure the straps.

Here’s one suggestion by Chris Morgan 7 years ago on BPL:

@idester-2-2 – Those are awesome! Very similar to the Goosefeet that JR mentioned above. I’d probably have jumped all over yours if they were a size Large.

@davidinkenai
– Now that makes a ton of sense – I really like this idea. I’ll bet there are clever ways to make these multi-use, too… pillow comes to mind immediately. Thanks so much for the good thought here!
