Want recommendations for a large 4-person tent and a 1-person tent

Re:  the one-person tent:

BPL forums no longer show the locale of the posters.  However, in most locales, if you get hit with a heavy rainstorm at the end of the day, then you will regret acquiring a inner-pitch-first tent.  Because the inner, including the floor, will get soaked.  One exception would be a ‘solid’ inner of fabric that covers the entire ceiling, breathes, and has a DWR (water repellent) coat that will repel rain for long enough to pitch the inner, and keep your bathtub floor from filling up.  But totally ‘solid’ inner tents that are also lightweight are not common, and you might have to build your own.

Note that the inner doors can be netting for ventilation, and do not have to be solid, so long as the solid inner ceiling completely covers the floor with a slight overhang to keep out the rain.

For keeping a dry inner tent, there are alternatives to the above approach; such as single walls, clip-in inners, and external poles; but they all have disadvantages.  Don’t know why most tents don’t address these issues, except that folks going out for an overnight or long weekend can backpack for quite a while before encountering a heavy downpour when pitching.  So it can be an ‘out of sight-out of mind’ issue for a long time.  But if you go out for week(s) at a time, or pack in locales that are well-watered, you will sooner or later get soaked and decide to get a tent that provides the protection of a ‘dry pitch.’

I have 2 dry pitch tents already, and I am considering a Cinch Hub 4-person pop up tent which pitches outer first.

I have a durston x-mid one person. The fly does set up first. You can just use the fly, just set up the inner if it isn’t going to rain, or use them both.  It’s a great tent. Not as light as dcf, but it’s less than 2lb for both pieces. 19oz for just the fly.

I have been looking at the Durston X-mid in DCF.

Our first DCF X-Mid will be a singlewall (pitches as a single unit) so the floor won’t get wet but it’s not a doublewall either. We plan to add doublewall DCF versions after that, but don’t have a clear timeline at this point (at least a year off).

Double wall DCF tent sounds nice. Will you have two inner tents?

Dan…Any plans for offering a mostly fabric inner for the x-mid 2? We would love to be able to order a mostly-fabric inner. Then, summertime we’d use the all mesh inner, and winter we’d use the fabric inner!

Perhaps look at the Big Agnes 4 Season 4 person tents if you want total weather proofing and dont care about weight.  Not sure they will be tall enough for you though.

The other option would be to buy a summer family tent from REI or BigAgnes that is tall enough and seal all the non sealed seams.

Paul: Yes a solid inner is in the works. We expect to have that out in mid-late 2022. At first it’ll just be sold as complete tents but as we catch up on production we plan to add the option to buy the inner separately.

Troy: A future doublewall DCF version might use the same inner tent as the regular X-Mid. That would likely make the most sense because I’m not a big fan of DCF floors since they don’t save weight nor improve lifespan yet they add bulk and cost. If we did that, then the same mesh and solid inners would fit.

I can give you a good deal on a Big Agnes Guard Station 4 with inner, but it’s shorter than you want, you couldn’t stand up in it.

I will pass for now and rethink everything. I have a 2 person tent I like and a Luxe Megahorn 4, but you really cant stand up in the Megahorn, but it is a hot tent. I may go back to a Gazelle T4 simply for the 90 second setup and I can stand up in it, but I dont like the doors and it is nearly 6′ long packed. Or a Clinch Hub which is also a quick setup with better doors. The cinch hub has a 6′-2″ center height so it should do, but packs into a disk with a diameter of  2′-10″.
