Companion forum thread to: Wandering in a Thirsty Country – Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument
When Donald Trump took office he appointed as his Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke, a former member of Congress with a 4% lifetime score from the League of Conservation voters. Like Trump’s other cabinet members, much ink has been spilled concerning Zinke’s qualifications, the “fox guarding the henhouse” nature of his appointment, the various scandals that have surfaced during his time at Interior. Perhaps less well known to the general public is that Secretary Zinke, under orders from President Trump, recommended major changes to ten of the nation’s National Monuments. The most famous and contentious of these Monuments are Bears Ears and Grand Staircase – Escalante. But Organ Mountain – Desert Peaks, tucked away in a quiet corner of New Mexico, made the list as well.May 13, 2018 at 12:22 pm #3535190Kevin BBPL Member

Nice article! Kinda, High Country News-esque…
Brought back many memories from my college days tramping around those peaks and canyons. Rough country would shred the paws of the most trail-hardened dogs and mountain bike tire’s side-walls had a lifespan measured in weeks to months. Ray sounds like he hasn’t changed much at all other than larger volume tires…
Las Cruces has had a strong activist community advocating for public lands in southern New Mexico for going on 30 years, anchored in no small part by the scrappy Southwest Environmental Center and its members.
The view from the top of the Organs via Dark Canyon is something else, too…May 13, 2018 at 3:12 pm #3535213HkNewmanBPL Member

It’s a nice place, though more known for mountain biking and (more El Paso) climbing – the warnings tend to be about climbing fatalities in the Organ peaks. People have dry camped in the desert regions but there are mountain springs which may be running. Visitors need to know the various property boundaries too.May 13, 2018 at 11:47 pm #3535305Eric BlumensaadtBPL Member
@danepackerLocale: Mojave Desert
I live in southern Nevada’s Mojave Desert and can appreciate the beauty of southwestern deserts. We have our own fight with Zinke and his proposed reduction of our newly (Obama) designated Gold Butte N.M. area.
Face it, Trump wants to UNDO everything Obama dis, no matter how harmful this undoing is. Case in point – our recent withdrawal from the Iran nuclear arms deal.
If you look at Trump’s “accomplishments” they are almost all negations of Obama measures. Trump is a dangerous man in both foreign and domestic policy and people like GW Bush have stated as much publicly, most recently in his repudiation of the US withdrawl from the Iran nuclear agreement.
C’mon, you can see this reason behind Trump policy from outer space.
