I need recommendations for the best Wag Bag for backpacking.  I looked on BPL and there are lots of discussions concerning them, but I could not find specific product suggestions.  Thanks.

I’ve only used the GO Anywhere Cleanwaste bags for trips to Lake Powell.  I guess they’re OK, not having experience with anything else.  The bags contain a magic powder that turns liquids to some kind of gel. You get a tiny bit of toilet paper, a ziplock-type baggie to seal things in, and a sanitizing wipe.  The ziplock bag then goes into an outer plastic bag that seals with a wire tie.

Contents of the system are light and compact enough…until you use them.  Then they are heavy, smelly, and bulky.  Contents don’t escape, but the odor sure does.  I would really, REALLY hate to take a multi-day backpacking trip and have to haul several of these things out.  Eeyuu.

The bulk is of course the result of your diet and your gastro intestinal tract, not the cleanwaste bag.  I have found that the cleanwaste bag needs another bag around it for security, usually a 1 or 1.5 or 2 gal zip lock depending on the length of the trip. My trips that require WAG bags are snow camping trips of less than a week with small groups where I usually like to plan multi course meals. In winter I have have found the smell manageable.

Cheers
