Hey, stumbled upon this one in the Icebreaker catalogue – 135 weight hoody which is their summer blend of merino, tencel and nylon… Would think it will still be quite odour proof and Moosejaw has it’s weight listed as 4.8oz. Hood doesn’t look anything special, but it’s there at least.

Thinking about one as a PCT sleep top and occasional mid layer for warmth, to be partnered with my windshirt… Thoughts?

That looks like a really nice summer weight hoody and should be ideal with your windshirt. Â My only concern for a long hike would be its durability.
Cheaper on Amazon in some sizes
Ymmv but I managed to stink up my icebreaker tech tee on the JMT last summer in an irreparable manner. Mirazyme, SportWash and normal detergent can’t get the stink out. I will be purchasing 100% merino or just go synthetic with future purchases.
About durability: I have used the Sphere extensively on all my hikes since july this year (approx 30 days of hiking): not a single hole and it looks brand new.
It’s the best baselayer I’ve ever worn. Honestly.
I can’t comment on this very item, but I had ordered a different longsleeve baselayer hoody from Icebreaker one or two years ago and ended up returning it because the hood was totally unusable. It was cut really awfully so that even lying down, the hood wouldn’t stay on my head. Plus, it ruined the function of the high-collar as it wouldn’t snug around my neck at all due to the silly hood.
For me, if a baselayer does have a hood, it has to be really good so that I can leave my hat at home. If not it’s just dead weight.
Does this one have a decent hood?
The hood does look a bit loose, but I’ve got a big head, so hopefully it stays on well enough… my logic is that if it’s really cold and I desperately need the hood up for extra warmth it will either be under my windshirt or my down jacket hood…
Regarding stink – I’m also a bit unsure of the blends icebreaker does as my sister similarly managed to stink one up permanently, but this is a newer variety and I think that tencel should also be quite odour proof and I personally have a hard time permanently stinking up nylon… so overall I’m hopeful.
Good luck and please report back!
I have one of these that I got on stp a while back. The actual weight on my size large is somewhere around 8oz, so I’m pretty sure the moosejaw # is wrong. The hood is huge, and seems designed more for sun protection, but does add some nice warmth and additional wind coverage to a windshirt. In cooler weather, I prefer my i/o bio (pure merino with a touch of elastic) over this one, though.
Icebreaker customer service confirms the moose jaw weight is understated:
Hi Lachlan
Thank you for your email. The weight of this garment is 270-290grams depending on the size.
Cheers

Sorry folks, move along, nothing to see here :) at these weights I’d go an Ibex Indie or Cap4 hoody… Or more like just my prior plan of none of the above.
I have the sphere polo shirts, the material is very thin. In sunny weather I could see it being very useful as a standalone base layer to keep sun off. If an insect shield treatment works with the material that would be ideal for summer use.
