Couple of questions. I have a ULA P1 that I have used for apx. 12 yrs. I currently have an REI Quarter Dome T2 plus tent weighing apx. 5 Lbs., The suggested weight limit on the ULA is around 30 Lbs. I want to be able to do some winter backpacking. Just curious if there is a way to better pack this pack so as to allow more room/usability. Anyone out there use a P1 in winter? Anyone pack the tent loosely down in the bottom of the pack or strap it to the outside top of the pack? Also thinking about not putting my sleeping pad in a stuff sack, but deflating flat, along with the pillow, and placing these in the sleeping bag stuff sack. Sleeping bag stuff sack is larger than normal, so it fills a wider area in the bottom of the pack. I am trying to get away from using stuff sacks, to use more area inside the pack. I have a feeling I need a larger capacity pack so I can use this tent in winter. Would rather purchase a new pack rather than a new tent, although I have been looking at the Big Agnes Copper Spur 2 Platinum. Suggestions on working with this pack or stepping up to a lightweight pack that can handle 40 Lbs.? Thanks.

I have a Copper Spur. For winter I would vastly prefer a double wall tent with 2 solid walls. The Copper Spur has a mesh inner.
Your best bet, of course, is to get a new shelter. But working with what you have…
I wouldn’t want my shelter at the bottom of my pack — when you get to camp, where do you put everything you have to take out of your pack to get your shelter out, on the ground exposed to the weather?
I suggest getting rid of the sleeping bag stuff sack, put the bag loose on the bottom of the pack. Folding the sleeping pad flat is fine, it’s what I do.
