Have an Ultamid 4 and trying to choose center pole for a month-long trip. I have the HMG center pole made for it. I also have BD Alpine Carbon Cork poles, for which I got a spare third (end/tip) segment and cut it…acts well as a coupler between the two poles so there’s no lashing (like Locus Gear offered for their poles https://locusgear.com/items/cp3-joint/?lang=en). The HMG center pole is larger diameter but thin walled compared to the BD poles and DIY joint. But, I also understand that carbon wall construction may impact the strength, too(?). Ignoring the issue of whether I’m already using the trekking poles, I’m curious how different the two will perform in heavy storms (lots of wind/rain…Colorado monsoon). Is one significantly more likely to snap/hold up than the other? Anyone able to offer (pseudo)quantifiable comparisons?

Good day Shawn,

I have an Ultamid 4 too and I hiked with it in windy Iceland including very far-north Hornstrandir peninsula.

At the end I took my locus gear poles with the connection section AND a pair of Fizan trekking poles (https://drop.com/buy/drop-fizan-compact-trekking-poles#overview) I got from drop connected together like so: one pole’s tip goes straight into second section of another pole.
Then I strapped those two pairs with the orange straps that come with Ultamid. Only then the tent was somewhat stable in those crazy winds.

Hope this was helpful!

Wow, what a beautiful place. Definitely gives me something to think about – that you had two poles like the setup I was considering as one pole and found at the edge of sufficient. This is a perfect use scenario fitting my question. Thank you! I wonder if anyone has used a similar single pole and had it fail. Now I hope someone has experience with the HMG center pole in similar conditions. I’m not a fan of the idea of carrying both but maybe that’s something I need to consider.

You are welcome Shawn and I truly recommend visiting this spot :)
As for the poles, since you backpack with Ultamid 4 you surely have at least one companion – use his/her poles?
