Hello,
I was wondering if there are any UL pillows out there that are at least 5″+ inflated. Thank you.
what is the weight range for a ul pillow?
I am open.
Sea to Summit seems to have the tallest pillows. Their Aeros Ultralight Deluxe says it’s 5.5 inches, weighing 4.6 oz. https://seatosummit.com/products/aeros-ultralight-deluxe-pillow
My wife will be trying out their Aeros Down Pillow. It’s 4.7″ tall but you could perhaps supplement some clothing items to make it taller. The regular size is only 2.5 oz. https://seatosummit.com/products/aeros-down-pillow?variant=42126718533805
Myself I’m using a Big Sky Dream Sleeper coupled with a down puffy. I’m going to try using my headnet as a pillow case. This gets me to around 5 inches and I think it will do quite well for side sleeping. After cinching the neck cord I added a little bungee to keep everything in place.

Mine is 3 inches. 2.9 ounces.
A bunch of layers of closed cell foam to produce the desired thickness. That won’t compress much when you put your head on it.
Then a layer of synthetic padding from a seat cushion. This compresses, is more comfortable than putting my head directly on the closed cell foam.
Supplex case around it, with velcro closure. I can take it off and wash it. I drool on it.
I assume you’re not talking MYOG, but there’s an idea.
My set up is similar to Jerry’s (I think I got the idea from a post of yours, Jerry).
Thermarest inflatable pillow on a couple of layers of closed cell foam.
Ive cut the foam to the same shape as the pillow. When packing up, the foam goes at the bottom of my pack – shapes my pack nicely, so is multi- use 😁. I could use it as a sit pad, but I don’t want to squish it. My most comfortable pillow arrangement ever!
My set up has a lightweight inflatable pillow (I think I use Exped Ultra), an old Thermarest pillow case, and some down insulation (down vest, arms, or Timmermade 0.75 sweater). If it is so cold that I need that insulation, I’ll just toughen up that night.
Down for the cushion comfort, pillow case to keep my grim from the down and for a nice facial surface, and inflatable pillow for the adjustable height.
The discontinued Thermarest pillow case is another example of a reoccurring lesson to always buy a backup of items you value…
My Aeros premium is 4.3″ and 2.8oz with bag. Adding pad straps could get it to 5″ sitting on top of 1″ of clothes
Similar to Erik’s suggestion, the Big Sky Ultralight (4″) with added pad straps, wrapped in a buff then jam some stuff under it to get it higher is the lighest option I’ve seen
Turnkey, the Exped REM claims up to 6″ but is 5.6oz

I bring a big puffy and a pillow case. Because I have the big puffy even in summer–I hike at altitude–I can leave other layers behind to compensate on weight. And the puffy serves as a fabulous down pillow at night. So, I also save on the weight and space of bringing an inflatable pillow. It’s all a wash, or balances out on the side of bringing a puffy and leaving all the rest at home.
One thing that’s really variable is that it seems that most height measurements are for a fully-inflated pillow. Which, in my experience, is really hard and uncomfortable.
Curious about the closed-cell foam solutions. I was initially thinking of using an inflatable for height and then down/soft foam on top for better against-the-face feel. Does the foam have any advantages over inflatable (besides being probably easier to stack up)?
(Also, is there a preferred brand/type of CCF to use?)
Well, this is very extravagant but my new plan is to bring an extra alpha pullover and use it to supplement the sea to summit pillow if I don’t need it for sleeping. This would add a bit of height, warmth, and comfort to the pillow. The two pullovers and windshirt means I can leave my puffy home, but I still gain a little bit in weight (4 ounces). However, the full combo is warmer than my puffy alone, is more flexible during daytime hiking, and then I can sleep in greater comfort for neck.
Joshua, I have my inflatable pillow (thermarest airhead) on top of 2 layers of closed cell foam. It means I can leave the pillow less inflated/softer . Not any particular closed cell foam – just the thickest, firmest stuff we had in our spares box 🙂. Even cut out a small extra piece that goes in the pillow cover and under the pillow for extra neck support. Like a contoured pillow.
Cheers
It wasn’t something I planned but in hindsight an ultralight dry bag worked great as a pillow one time, multiuse item and volume was adjustable. I’m a side sleeper so stack height has always been an issue this worked well. Example option https://www.rei.com/product/218732/sea-to-summit-ultra-sil-dry-bag
I always wanted to use a SAM splint for multiple uses, like sit pad and adding height to pillow setup…need to buy one.
I have a sea to summit inflatable. Just over 4”. I also stuff my puffy in a stuff sack. When on my side I stack the two, and when on my back slip the stuff sack beneath my knees.
Not exactly a 5” pillow, but the 2-piece system works well.
