So I am being layed off from work and am thinking of doing some hiking trips while they are still paying me.  Considering taking a trip over to the UK since my mother lives over there starting sometime in April. Any recommendations for long distance trails to hike over there?  Already considering doing cape wrath trail but what others should I consider?  Not too worried about length of time to complete as I have the whole summer free at this point

Amy and I have taken seven long distance backpacking trips in Britain.  We have published one trip report concerning Cape Wrath on Backpacking Light: http://backpackinglight.com/forums/topic/78369/

We have also placed a trip report about the Cambrian Way, Offa’s Dyke Path and Cotswold’s Way at: https://amyl.smugmug.com/Backpacking/Europe/200907-WalesEngland-Hike-1/

We have greatly enjoyed all of our trips in the UK.  With the Right to Roam laws, you can legally walk over a vast proportion of the countryside.  There is an enormous network of public walking paths and more being opened all of the time. There is functionally no wilderness in a US sense, although portions of Scotland are reasonably wild.  You can use B&B’s if you prefer, but official public campsites can be hard to come by.  We have stealth camped extensively without any issues.  OS maps are the best topographic maps in the world.

As to what to walk, we have particularly enjoyed the coastal hikes such at the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path and the Southwest Coast Path.  Currently, the British government is actively working to create a coastal path around the entire island.  The section in Wales is apparently complete and might be a good option.  See our above mentioned trip reports about other walks you could consider.

If you have any specific questions, send us a PM.

James
