Good evening. New member here seeking some tent advice as I try to get my kids into camping. I’m looking for a lightweight tent that can realistically accommodate 2 people (either an adult + kid) or two kids. Â I’ve poured over various reviews found through Google and the common themes are the tents either do not really accommodate 2 people, are either heavy, or don’t hold up very well because of the fabric choice.
A little bit of background. I have 10 year old twins and really haven’t backpacked since their birth but I have done a bit of bike packing, so some of my kit is pretty LW to begin with. I have a Tarptent Moment that frankly feels like a coffin because I’m 6ft 2 and my face is thisclose to the netting, but I tolerate it since it is light and easy to set up. The only other shelter I have is a 20 year old MtnHardware rig that weighs 8 pounds, so that’s out of the question. Both kids are capable hikers and we can split up the load, I know, but I’d like to start with something reasonably light.
I’ve reached the point in life that I no longer want or need to haul stuff that isn’t necessary, but I don’t want to stuff myself or the kids into a cramped tent that will make each trip unpleasant. I’m in NY, and most of my hiking will be in the Hudson Valley and Catskills. I keep coming back to the BA tents but various reviewers have criticized durability and actual roominess for 2.
I realize I mentioned 2 kids + me  = 3! The plan is one kid at a time with me or the two in one shelter and me in the Moment.
Thank you in advance for your help and I hope to be a productive member of the community here!
