Protrail -The One_DiagramsI created these diagrams to help understand the interior spacial differences between the Protrail & The One. Hope they will be helpful to anyone considering these two tents but don’t have access to, or experience with either (like myself).

In section B, the figure is centered on the ridge/pole location and not offset to be more aligned with the opening because people come in different sizes, it’s just a diagram. Most of the dimensions were taken from the manufacturers specs but some (marked with [?]) I had to calculate from looking at photos. Feel free to fill in the blanks and I’ll try to update the drawings.

That’s very interesting. My first observation is that the ProTrail looks like it provides far more livable space and less vestibule at the cost of a significantly larger footprint.

The diminished vestibule is offset by much more interior space meaning gear could be inside the shelter rather than outside under the porch.

This is a great comparison, and a great methodology. It’s difficult to compare various tents & tarps, and I often end up sketching something like your diagrams. The sections are very helpful. My only comment/request would be to show on the plans where the sections are taken.

Very nice. I considered the Protrail but decided not to purchase because of the entry. Crawling on hands and knees isn’t for me. I have the One and it’s quite a nice tent for the weight-packs up incredibly small.

Like Brad, I’ve reached the point where side entry is much easier on my bod.  I have an old spinnaker The One and love it.  I also decided this year that our Squall no longer works for me (same issue) so i made the leap for an X-Mid Pro 2 for our 2 person.

Brad, I am 6’ 1”.  You definitely don’t have to crawl to get in as all of the significant height is at the front.

To expand on your observation, I think the diagrams show if there’s a preference for “livable space” sitting up at an open door, The One serves that purpose well with greater volume up high and a bit more canopy overhead. But if the preference for “livable space” is while inhabiting the tent after the door is zipped up, the Protrail is significantly more spacious with far greater overall width and max height at the head end.

The diagrams helped me understand in a quantitative way how these two different tent forms (and their associated entry locations/concentration of volume) would effect aspects of “living”. There’s a cost to each which will have greater or lessor bearing depending on individual priorities and other considerations (quality of construction & materials, isolation from inevitable condensation, simplicity of set-up, weight and yes…entry location). Just thought it would be worth adding to the bucket when deciding between these two specific tents.
