Really enjoyed reading this, reminds me of trips I’ve taken with friends over the years. I do a significant chunk of my backpacking solo, but always cherish the trips I take with others — especially when I get to share with them a really special place. And we’ve rarely shirked the whisky duty either ; )

That was a nice brown trout, bet that was a blast to land on a tenkara rig!

Just curious, but is the title a reference to “Casey Jones” by the Grateful Dead?

Sorry to hear that area burned . . . guess “Fire On The Mountain” was unfortunately appropriate for a while : (

@Mark – thanks for the kind words.
The title is indeed a reference to the Dead song, which in turn refers to old folk songs telling the story of an engineer whose obsession with schedules and being on time leads to disaster. There is an appropriate folk song reference for pretty much every backpacking story.

I’ve driven through Middle Park countless times on my way to the Flattops or Zirkels, but never thought to do a trip there. I will definitely take a closer look.
