Looking for trip recommendations for a long weekender in the front range. Meeting up with an old friend who lives in Longmont (I live in CA). I’d like to keep the trip mellow-ish hiking between 20 and 30 miles.

Because of the crowds, I’ve stopped doing overnights in front-range wilderness areas (RMNP, Indian Peaks, James Peak, etc.). In most cases, permits are required, sometimes even for day-hiking. (Not true of James Peak.) There are off trail opportunities, but that takes more insider knowledge. Indian Peaks is spectacular of course, but it has been loved to death. Every trail is a friggin’ ant hill, and you need to jump on the internet when the applications open to get a parking permit to get to the TH. It’s so sad. When I first moved here, I roamed all over that wilderness, and it was incredible.
Lost Creek is also extremely popular. I don’t find it very special, TBH, maybe best for fall color or an early season trip before the mountains have melted.
Since your friend is in Longmont, you could also look at the areas closer to Ft Collins, like the Rawah. I did one trip there years ago and it was ok, but certainly not representative of the best Colorado has to offer.
I generally find it to be worth the drive to go further afield from the population centers. 3-4 hour drive minimum.
