I’ve been eying up the XMID 1 and 2 in the vain hope I might be able to score a new or used one sometime this month. However, the more reviews I’m looking at the more I think I need to explore more options and see what other people think.
I’m in AZ and will mostly be backpacking solo in a desert environments while section hiking the AZT. I have a BA Tiger Wall for when I camp in wet environments or bring my pup but it’s big and heavy and I’d like to give a trekking pole tent a try. I’m interested in exploring single or double wall side entry trekking pole tents generally under $300-350ish which would eliminate DCF. I could cowboy camp but the thought of spiders, scorpions, and bugs crawling on me will keep me up at night so an enclosed tent is the best option for now. The SMD Deschutes Plus Tarp with netting skirt would be the most exposure I’d be comfortable with.
The concern is that I use a wide BA QCore sleeping pad (with a 1/4in cc pad for protection in the desert) which is about 4in thick and 25in wide. I’m not tall, standing at 5ft4in but I am worried about my head or feet touching the walls of the tent when I’m the raised sleeping pad. Condensation will probably be minimal but may be present when it’s colder. Wind/blowing dust will likely be another major concern.
Anyone have experience with thick sleeping pads and different types of tents? Would a 2 person be something worth looking into to account for more room? I really would prefer to keep the weight as low as possible but I want to be comfortable.
