Hi, all. I’ve seen the Torrid, Proton, and Micro Puff recommended in various places on this site. (The Torrid Jacket is in the Publisher’s Gear Guide and Guide’s Gear, and the pullover is Highly Recommended; the Proton is Highly Recommended and on the Masterclass Trip Planner & Gear List; and the Micro Puff is in Guide’s Gear and the Masterclass Trip Planner & Gear List.) I asked a similar question a few weeks ago that ended up giving me great direction towards AD/windshirt combos (or similar) for active use. But I’m still left with the gnawing question of how these jackets stack up against each other – i.e., whether any of them are seen as better than any of the others for particular uses or generally. (I’m also curious whether anyone has thoughts on the Thermawrap Pro and how it might stack up.) Cost is not an issue, for this particular purchase. Anyhow, thought I’d just see whether anyone has any other thoughts, before I pull the trigger. Specs below.

I’ve had the Torrid and the Micro Puff and I prefer the Torrid. The Micro Puff is a bit less delicate, but I’m pretty gentle with my gear so that’s not a concern of mine. The Torrid weighs significantly less in the same size without any noticeable decrease in warmth. They both fit about the same.

The only synthetic fill jacket I have is the Micro Puff Hoody. Mine is a size M and weighs 9.9 oz’s. I really like it, but JGH’s recommendation is really something I’d listen to given he’s had both. The Torrid’s price is better too.

I am now on my 2nd of both Torrid (added hood on 2nd) and Patagonia closest weight “puff”.  Started with an older “puff” and switched to Torrid when puff became worn. Both my Torrids are lighter and, for me, warmer, and it’s the only one I take on trail now. My 2nd Patagonia is for around town, for keeping down family comments on styling.

@ Alan

Ditto. The Patagonia Micro Puff is a good looking jacket, so I wear mine around town, too.

I own both Micro Puff and Torrid. I would say the Torrid is a bit warmer. The MP packs smallish, is pretty darn stylish IMO and is my go to town jacket. With an R1 Air under its very comfortable static in the 20’s F.
