I’m not quite sure to put this in gear or In pretrip planning :)
I’m heading to the new Patagonia National Park in 2 weeks.
But I’m old school and I like a map and compass.
mytopo.com does not cover Chile! Does anyone know where I can get a map?

I’m sure you’ve seen the ones at Adventurealan.com? Otherwise I am not sure where to get any but I would like to do a trip there next spring and also like paper maps, so if you find anything please report back.
Long shot – CalTopo. I used it to profile routes is Italy. I stumbled onto some bike routes and discovered the name of the appropriate map set. It’s free and the learning curve isn’t onerous.

I have just hiked 1,500 km on the Greater Patagonian Trail – in fact, I am still in Chile right now. It is almost impossible to get paper maps for hiking in Chile except for the over popular destinations. I have hiked here with the OSM based maps downloaded from gpsfiledepot.com.
Gaia has topo of that area. No shading or relief but you can overlay with a sat view. This post piqued my interest so I checked. I’d try to import Alan Dixon’s gpx files into a Gaia file and print it. Alan Dixon does some nice work, a real community asset. His website info and photos are really interesting and informative. Still wonder personally if I wouldn’t try El Chalten/Fitzroy first. Maybe that’s gotten too popular and a little tattered like Las Torres, where I read they have started to limit the permits and have some world class trail designing group from I think Vermont re-engineering the trails. The logistics as laid out in Dixon’s report basically mean the travel each way could easily take 4 days. 8 days of hard travel AND whatever days spent hiking. A big commitment but is it ever beautiful! Maybe the thing to do is just go live down there one winter. Buy a beater. See the whole countryside. Ha!
