I have some swelling in my feet and ankles. so, the Darn Tough Socks are too tight and restrictive.
Do you know of wool or alpaca socks that are more forgiving?Mar 1, 2026 at 4:33 am #3848458Darn Tough has a brand that makes wider socks: Wide Open socks. They should be less restrictive, and I think that they have the same lifetime guarantee.
Mar 1, 2026 at 6:40 am #3848461Thank you very much. I had not heard of that.
Mar 1, 2026 at 8:55 am #3848462I hadn’t heard of Wide Open either, but I’m going to check them out…cautiously. In my experience, all wool socks get tighter and tighter with every wash, even with cold water and line drying. Frustrating.
Mar 1, 2026 at 12:01 pm #3848468I appreciate all the feedback! I ordered some ANTSANG Merino Wool Hiking Socks.
I looked at the Wide Open socks but they would take longer to ship, and I’ll be leaving for a camping trip in the next couple days.
I’ll look at some of the others later on.

Please let us know how they work out!
Mar 1, 2026 at 4:47 pm #3848478I will.
They are supposed to arrive tomorrow, and I have a five-day camping trip starting Wednesday.
Of course, it’s going to be in the 70s so I may be limited on how much I wear them.

Mar 2, 2026 at 9:57 am #3848505I am noticing the same…Darn Tough socks are shrinking too much and become too tight. I bought a larger size – still the same problem. Prior versions didn’t have a cushioned feet – but now, all of the Darn Tough seem to have cushion at the bottom which I feel can create blisters as the cushion is soft and can slide around.
Mar 2, 2026 at 11:03 am #3848506Yes, the Darn Tough hiker socks are (mostly?) cushioned. Â If you want no cushion have a look at their running socks.
Mar 4, 2026 at 12:17 pm #3848586Just a heads up-in my experience Darn Toughs have become slightly more narrow compared to a few years ago. Their running socks are very tight and not for wide footed people.
Mar 5, 2026 at 2:34 pm #3848656I also don’t like how tight Darn Toughs are, I have several different kinds and they all annoy me. Â Recently I found some old Smartwool’s in the back of my drawer and they are much more relaxed. Â Maybe it’s worth trying a pair of them.
Around the house this winter I’ve been wearing AD socks I made (sans shoes, as slippers more or less). Â They are SUPER loose, I love ’em. Â I even wear them outside the house sometimes since they fit in shoes unlike slippers.
