Thoughts on packs with a single side zip versus bottom zip?

I would prefer a pack with a complete U-shaped zip along the entire body so that the entire back can open up like a flap, giving access to everything inside like a suitcase, BUT I want one that also has an extendable collar with a typical drawstring roll top opening.

I think you’re describing the Zpacks Arc Zip.

Wow, the Arc Zip looks amazing. Well, aesthetically it looks like crap but the practicality of it looks great.

It’s made from Cuben fiber… so doesn’t it sound really crinkly? I’ll often be sharing a dorm room with other backpackers and I’m afraid a gigantic potato chip bag would be frowned upon…

There is also the ULA Camino.  Roll top pack with horseshoe zipper access.

Look at the Arc Haul Zip…different fabric that is not “crinkly” at all in my experience.

Nice looking pack Joel.  Looks like it would ride nice.  How much trail time have has it “under it’s belt”.  Was that a Gossamer Gear aluminum stay?

Jim. Not much trail time yet as i just finished it up about a month ago. You are correct, it is a Gossamer Gear Mariposa stay and belt. The Mariposa is a great pack but like almost all other lightweight packs, lack any ability to seriously organize your gear. I don’t trust my wife’s machine to sew through the heavier materials necessary to make a belt and shoulder harnesses. The shoulder harness is from an old cosco backpack I bought about 15 years ago.  My next model I may try and find an old Osprey Atmos 65 and harvest the harness from it and build the new gear holding bag. The compartmentalized bag is fantastic and makes packing very simple and organized! You can get to any piece of gear within seconds.

Does the Arc series actually allow you to switch between an arced back and a straight back? Sometimes I don’t like the feeling of an arced back because the weight of the pack is shifted more towards the back and I’m forced to lean forward more to compensate for the shifted center of gravity.

In those cases I would prefer to have a straight back and simply sacrifice the airflow for a more upright stance.

Victor, I’ve not used an Arc pack but there are many reviews out there and I’m pretty sure everyone says you can adjust the amount of arc to your liking. I assume that means you can go full flat if you want.

Yes, it does, though the pack has to be empty or very loosely packed when you do it IME.
