I was lucky enough to get out to SEKI twice this summer, this report is the second of those two outings. I visited a few places I had been wanting to see, namely Center Basin and Junction Pass (parts of the old JMT). It didn’t disappoint of course. We also went over Harrison Pass which was a little challenging to figure out. It all made for a fun little adventure over the extended Labor Day weekend.

No bugs and good times!

I forgot the TP, and while looking for some corn lilies to use, I found an unopened pack of “personal tissue” in the bushes. Could never have made that one up. The universe always provides!

Thanks for sharing your trip report. That was a fun read. REasing about those chutes get me nervous!

Wow Jacob! Saw your comments on my report and then saw your entry and link to hikeitlikeit. I spent about an hour perusing your site and I’m in awe of your experiences and writing abilities. Hope you feel like sharing…I’m going to knock on your door planning the next west coast adventure.  Good stuff.

Beautiful photos, great trip report!  Thanks for posting this, Jacob.

I read your comment about wishing you’d had a better camera, but you certainly did the utmost with the one you had.  Which version of the RX100 is yours?

Thanks for your trip report and beautiful photos (with amazing clarity). I appreciate reliving those areas through your blog.

Scree-skiing down the upper section of Junction Pass on the south side was fun, but I hit the endless talus on the lower section toward the end of the day and it was a morale killer:)

That photo of Adam descending Harrison really captures the steepness of those passes on the north side of the Kings/Kern Divide!

Thanks for the kind words, everyone.

Matthew, a couple of those chutes made me a little nervous too :)

Russ, sure, feel free to hit me up if you’re planning another trip. If there are any areas that I can provide information on, I’m happy to do that.

Debbie, thanks. I own the original RX100. I don’t think the sensor has changed in any significant way since then, they just keep adding more bells and whistles to the camera, and better video capability. It is a very decent point and shoot and I’ve learned a few tricks on how to make the most of it. I also process my photos in LightRoom which makes a big difference in the final product.

Craig, Center Basin is worth a visit if you’re in that area. Spending an evening at Golden Bear lake would be my recommendation! It’s not big enough to get really immersed in like say, Ionian Basin for example, but as part of a trip like we did it was a nice place to visit.

Art, thanks, it was a great time indeed. We even had time for some alcohol and other adult libations on this one. It was a nice change to NOT hike all day and set up camp at dark!

Andy, that talus field on the South side of Junction Pass is gnarly. I can easily imagine how it could be a big downer to enter into it at the end of the day… even on our relatively short day it got to be a bit much! We stopped for 20-30 mins to recover before going over Shepherd Pass. The camera always seems to betray the steepness of slopes, but sometimes you get just enough of a hint to know when you’re looking at something really steep. I saw a couple on your trip report that gave me the same feeling (Snow Tongue, etc…). That was an amazing trip you did…

That is some beautiful country you guys passed through.  In great style, I might add.  Your most excellent trip report brought back fond memories of times past.  I would highly recommend that you follow through on your first instinct to explore the Kern Basin.  You won’t be disappointed.  Thank’s for posting this one.

@CameronM – Thanks. Sharing is all part of the fun :)

@Ouzel – Hey Tom! Thanks. I think it’s safe to say I will definitely be back to explore Kern Basin. It’s sort of the last place in that area that I have not poked around in.

Take a close look at Kaweah Basin when you start focusing.  It’s the crème de al crème.
