What pegs do you use to peg tarp corners directly to the ground (without guyline)? I have Y pegs. Is there a way of using Y-pegs with the corner tags, or do I need to get some shepherds-crook shaped pegs for this?

Cheers all

I hadn’t thought to call them “Y-pegs” but I assume you’re referring to tent pegs with a “Y” cross-section like MSR Groundhogs:

(that’s a jpeg of a y-peg).

Is there a distinct enough edge on the grommet or a small loop of cordage to catch on that notch in the Y-peg?   Even if not, driving it in at a shallower angle ought to hold.

I’ve been transitioning to the crazy-small shepard’s hook style.  Bicycle spoke gauge and about 2 grams each. Sometimes I use two of them, at different angles through a grommet or small loop at ground level.  It doubles the hold power and them being at different angles avoids the grommet/loop riding up on the peg(s).

I now purchase all my stakes on Ebay from China, way cheaper, for both Al and Ti.  If I recall, Andy Skurka recommends this.  They look exactly like the name brand stakes you get in the US.

Anyone have bad experience with Chinese stakes?  Skurka thinks they are all the same, just rebranded.

I don’t know about the Chinese stakes, but I will say that Chinese quality control has gotten pretty good in general.  It’s not like the 90s when everything Chinese was utter crap.  That said, counterfeit MSR Groundhogs have been found, which just blows my mind.  They apparently were such soft aluminum that the heads snapped off.

Something like the MSR Hook Stakes (shephard’s hook type) but you could also tie a very small loop of cord to the corners (eg 1″ diameter or less) and use regular stakes.
