I’ve been a fan of the California Innocence Projects for some time.

Essentially they defend people who are innocent of crimes and try to get them freed from prison.

Youtube video

These are innocent people who have been wrongly convicted.

I thought it might be nice to volunteer to take these people into the Wilderness (Yosemite, Sequoia) after they have been in prison for so long.

It would be the opposite of what they experienced.

I’ve reached out to them and they are very receptive to the idea and I’m going to jump on a call with them tomorrow.

I’m wondering if anyone would be interesting in collaborating on this with me.  It would be nice to have 2-4 of us take them out either in small groups or one at a time. It would be more fun with a small group of us.

Additionally I would probably need to get some donations of gear.  Probably older gear in the form of backpacks, etc.  Either that or perhaps the core members could just keep the gear and we can have a “virtual kit” of gear setup that we can pool for depending on the person we’re bringing.

I’m also going to be filming this and their reaction to being in the woods. Should make for an interesting video.  (assuming they want to be filmed that is…)

Wow, great idea — I would participate if I were in your area…

Sign me up. I think this is an awesome idea and I would be happy to help in any way. I have enough extra gear to outfit one person with a pretty nice lightweight kit, but that’s about it. This would be a great topic to bring up on your phone call with them tomorrow – They may be willing to purchase some gear.

I’ve led a few trips with kids who had been in juvenile detention and/or trouble of various other sorts. It was a transformative experience for almost all of them, and it was an honor and a privilege to share that experience.

I would love to help with this! Have a little extra gear as well and could participate in some trips.

What a great idea!

Given times and locations, I’d be interested in helping as well. I used to take under-served kids on backpacking trips 45 years ago. This would be full circle!

Great. Nice to get your support guys.

I was also thinking of starting a Kickstarter and seeing if we can receive any donations.

There are a few things we need to buy like shoes and underwear which can’t really be shared.  That and food.  Food is expensive and I don’t to put ANY burden on anyone who has spent so much time in prison.

I just want to basically pick them up and take them on an awesome world changing adventure.

What a great idea, Kevin.

I’m not in a position right now to help directly, but would like to in the future. Please keep us updated.
