I’m considering ordering a swd long haul in either 40 or 50 liters, but haven’t decided which would be best for my load out. I’m retiring a 35 liter frameless pack that fits all of 3 season gear perfectly and 5-6 days of food. I’m also hiking in more areas that require bear cans and I’m into the idea of always bringing some hard canister for all my trips. my baseweight is low enough to accommodate it, now I just need an appropriate pack. I’m not really interested in storing a can up top under y-straps unless necessary
so, I’m looking for a framed pack that has enough capacity to add a bear vault, particularly the bv450/475/500. I’m drawn to the swd long haul from it’s positive reviews as a load hauler
how well does the long haul in 40 liters carry a bear vault? seems like the 50 liter version would definitely hold the can but with my minimal gear that fits into a 35 liter, I’m wondering if the 50l would just be too big and floppy. how well does the compression straps work for cinching the pack down?
does a bear vault barrel out the back of the 40l?
insight would be appreciated
