I’ve read some of the previous threads on whether or not to use sunscreen. I *must* use it, even if I’m well covered. I cannot risk a burn. So… for those of you who actually choose to use sunscreen, lotion or stick? I’m leaving out spray because of those heavy cans. Lotion seems double duty, for dry skin too, but stick seems lighter. Stick also for chafing? Which I’ve never had, but seems like people experience in hot weather. How much lotion or stick needed for covering hands, arms and face, in the Sierra, for 3 weeks? I’ll be wearing pants, but even though I have a cooler long sleeve, I’ll get sick of it and hike in a T-shirt. No matter what shirt, I won’t be able to stand long sleeves after a while.
Second question is bandaids. I just unpacked my usual first aid baggy, and I had the same 20 bandaids in there for the last 5 years. Clearly I don’t need them…unless I need them. Thinking maybe two, just in case! I have other stuff for blister care, haven’t used that either, except to give to others (which is a good enough reason to carry a small amount). I also have a couple of larger gauze pads, never used those either, except to give out to others. Keep a few of each anyway?
How many Benadryl? I may or may not be allergic to stings. My last major episode, some 15 yellow jacket stings, I was in bad shape for a week. Also aspirin – it’s the only anti inflammatory and pain med I can take, having developed allergies to naproxen and ibuprofen. I needed more Benadryl after having reactions to those drugs, one on a backcountry trip! That was a bit scary in fact. I might have a reaction to the aspirin? So much for modern medicine!
Thinking in the Sierra in summer, hand warmers are not needed? I will have light fleece gloves, and pockets. I am so used to finding myself in snow, rain, hail, etc. in midsummer, that it’s hard to rethink what I truly don’t need for warmer weather hiking. I’m bringing my warmer 20 deg sleeping bag only because it’s a full pound lighter than anything else I have, but I imagine many nights I’ll be sleeping on top or even without it.
