My wife and I am contemplating going to a different sun protection scheme. Especially since I have recently been “treated” (it is NO treat!) with radiation on my neck for an early-stage vocal cord cancer. As one consequence, the skin on the front of my neck is now more sensitive to UV exposure. So, a sun hoody looks like it would better protect my neck and Adam’s apple from the sun, but we would still need some sort of visor. So, we are trying to find a visor without a lid (since we would already have the top of our head covered by the hood of the hoody), and we would want the visor to be wider and offer more coverage than a baseball-type hat.

So: visor

no lid

wider than a baseball cap visor

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

We used the foam giveaway sun visors. You see handed out at lots of events with somebody’s logo on them. Virtually, Indestructible barely weighs a few grams and floats and doesn’t get soaked. It’s been a staple on our packs for many, many years.

I like the Sunday Afteroons Aero Visor, as it folds and so packs more easily, though it does tend to wear eventually at the fold. Outdoor Research used to do something similar, the Radar Visor, but I think it’s been discontinued.
For maximum coverage, though, something like the Sunday Afternoons Adventure Hat with the top and neck cape cut out looks uncool but works well.

It’s worthwhile considering the Montbell Rain Umbrero as a sun hat. It’s light (about 2 oz / 60g), doesn’t touch your head (other than a unique “harness” made of guyline cord), and can’t easily blow off your head (because the harness connects at four points instead of two — like real guylines).

It’s the lightest, coolest, hat that I am aware of. It’s expensive and hard to get in some states (like NY and CA) and the style is unique, but it’s a pretty great hat.

That Montbell “umbrero” looks great, I wish Montbell had it in stock!

Might have to go for the foam visor approach!

Thank you for posting a thread about anything other than trip planning software!  :-)
