I’m travelling to Turin, Italy from May 11 to 21. Originally thought it was be great to hike the Tour du Mont Blanc, but I’m not sure what the trail conditions will be then. Has anyone had experience on the TMB this time of year? Any insight would be appreciated.
If not the TMB, any other hikes in the area you would recommend?
Apr 21, 2017 at 6:04 pm #3464374May – I am not sure any of the Refuges will be open then. My memory is that they don’t open until the middle of June. We tried going early once or twice, and had problems.
But it could be OK, depending on the weather and the snow (which may still be there), if you are camping.Cheers
Apr 22, 2017 at 12:04 am #3464401That early in May as Roger noted camping will probably be the only option. All of the well known routes like the TMB have the same challenge of high passes that may require crampons and ice axe. People in tourist offices and ski areas might not really know the conditions of trails. You could contact some local guides and feign interest in a trip to get accurate information on the feasibility of routes. Be aware that although camping may be listed as prohibited, in France there is a distinction between “camping”, as in setting up for a week next to your car, and “bivouacking”, which is a temporary one-night stay in a tent while walking along a trail, which is usually acceptable.
Apr 22, 2017 at 12:26 am #3464403Just a casual thought: if you go walking in the European Alps outside the summer season, many summer day walkers will be a bit in awe.
But if you go camping outside the summer season, most walkers will really be in awe. Some Refuges – those really in the mountains, may have a ‘winter room’. This is unlocked and has a few beds and maybe a stove for heating (and water). Mattresses, yes, blankets – maybe. Down on the plains and in the valleys – very doubtful.
We have been in many small gear shops in the mountains there. They sell day packs, boots and joggers, clothing and jackets (and doo-dads). Tents, larger packs and sleeping bags – ‘we can get them in for you’. Of course, outside the season, those shops may not be open. No traffic.
We found fuel canisters in many supermarkets and even tiny village shops – at least they are open all year around.
Cheers
