I unexpectedly got stuck in Istanbul last few days and happened to run across a Decathalon outfitter store.  I haven’t run across an outfitter in months and had a look at just what 20,30,40, etc liters looks like.  I think something like 35-40 is the sweet spot for me personally.  So that GG Gorilla or even Murmur looks promising.   MLD Burn looks like right pack size too. I’m not sure what straps situation would be like on S vs M but durability is certainly there.

The Klymit pack, also looks interesting.  I’d definitely chop some of the extra pockets off though.  Big big plus: can buy with my Amazon credits!  The price is right!  I’m emailing for sure to get more deets.

Also, can people stop sending me PM’s asking if I want to buy their old pack that is 50, 60, 70, etc liters (recall that I’m looking for a pack SMALLER than what I currently have) and weighs 2-3 times what I already have?  I’m not interested.  Thanks :)

Try the Mountainsmith Haze. It can usually be found under $100 and weighs under 2 lbs. It carries extremely well and has outside pockets for day gear. I’m very, very happy with it.

That Haze looks gigantic though.

Edit- did you mean the 50, or the 40?  The reviews I saw are for the 50 I just realized.

Also I wouldn’t want those outer pockets (just the side water bottle ones).  Unless all that extra stuff could be cut off, I don’t think it would work.  Anyway it seems too heavy.

I think maybe I am not explaining well about what I mean with the pack not fitting, and this is why people are suggesting all these packs a good deal heavier than what I have but have all these suspensiony things.  The problem is not pain or that it feels heavy or something.  The problem is the shoulder straps are so wide apart, the pack keeps wanting to go side to side and isn’t tight to the back like I want it.  Also the torso is too long, plus I’ve only got an inch or two each side more that I can tighten with the belt.  I don’t know if that’s clearer or not.

Anyway that Murmur is lookin good, so’s the Burn, that Klymit is a little crazy looking to me but ticks the boxes.  I REALLY like the design on the Granite Gear Virga 26 but I think the volume is probably too small.  I really wish there was a way to try all these but I’m overseas until fairly close before the hike, I can’t do the mail, return, mail more, etc thing so much.  This is why I’m trying to do as much research online as possible.

Anyway thanks guys, keep ’em coming.
