Odors like that are usually caused by bacteria, so there are two steps:
- Kill the bacteria.
- Clean the smelly chemicals that the bacteria produced when it was alive.
Some thoughts:
- Is it a soft backpack? Can you put it in a washing machine with tech wash?
- If not, then maybe wipe with alcohol? Rinse, dry thoroughly. (Vinegar might also work, but it’s acidic and could damage some materials).
- Put a dryer sheet or two in the pack and wait a day or two. I don’t know what’s in those things, but they are great (and UL) deodorizers for gear/shoes/packs.
• 70% Isopropyl Alcohol: Contains 30% water, which slows evaporation and gives the alcohol enough contact time to penetrate and kill bacteria and viruses. This is the ideal concentration for skin disinfection and household cleaning.
Baking soda paste for the stink.
Good old protein odours. Best cure is enzyme cleaner meant specifically for that. I’ve had great results with “Active Wear” brand
