Steripen Users: Who uses larger than 1L bottles?

Moving part of a post to a dedicated thread.

I’m currently switching to using a steripen for water purification over aquamira. I’m still concerned about viruses (I see too much unburied toilet paper near aqua sources), so something like a befree is out.

I’m still experimenting on finding perfect containers….but what I’m really looking for is a way to treat water faster.

Now, looking at the smart water bottle….lets assume that steripen “approves” this bottle since its a 1 L normal water bottle. You can tell how tall the smart water bottle is…its 11.5″ tall, though the actual water container part is about 10″.

Even if you stir the water….I’m assuming that the water at the “top” of the bottle will only ever get partially closer to the bottom where UV light is. So that distance between UV light and water is sufficient to get the water sterilized. I.e…..if the height of the smart water bottle is Kosher, then it would stand to reason that you could also go wider than the smart water bottle and still get sterilized water.Has someone found 1.5-2L water bottles that might be a bit shorter than smart water bottles but quite a bit wider? My initial thought was using a 2L seeker bottle…

Its 9.9″ by 5.3″…so pretty much exactly as tall as the smart water bottle, just wider. It seems that its just about the same size as a Gatorade bottle opening, so I could fit the classic 3 in without needing to invert, but I can still stir the steripen around. If its filled with water, I should be able to set it on the ground and still hold the pen and bag with one hand to sterilize. And…if this was still effective, it would cut my treatment time in half……and battery use in half….so I would probably start buying lithiums instead of using niMH and would reduce my pack weight….

I use a 2L Platy with the top cut off to scoop water and as a treatment container, typically one liter at a time.  I then just pour the treated water into my water bottles.    The Platy just rolls up around my Steripen Opti secured with a rubber band.  I often fill up the Platy in camp and it just stands up on its own as a camp bucket.

Yeah…that actually seems like a great option….not sure why I doubted you that they would stand up…but they do! Both the short and tall one ->

If I cut off the top….most of the weight would be cut off too. I do like hte idea of wrapping the steripen up in the platypus…..great way to keep it protected and keep volume down on the pack (vs using a cut off 2L soda bottle as a scoop).

How did you cut the top? Any special way so it made things easier to pour?

The main question though…..is if its safe enough. Like, lets say I put in 1.5 or 1.75L in the platypus, from a mountain lake or stream, which is probably decently clean to start with….since I’m getting the steripen pretty deep into the platypus, which is the same height as the smartwater bottle, I wonder what level of purification I would get.

“I wonder what level of purification I would get.”

this would make me nervous. I use an old school wide mouth 1 liter water bottle to purify with a steripen. Which I really like. It’s worked for me for years, so I’ve come to trust it. You’re supposed to ‘stir’ the pen so a wide mouth bottle seems necessary. Then I use a larger soft bottle platy for in camp. I just drink a liter at a time as I hike. So I almost never carry any water.
