Nice!

Often people get so focused on the BIG trip, which entails planning and other logistics, that they don’t even look in their “backyard” for great hiking opportunities. And they stay home all too often.

Like you pointed out sometimes it is better to focus on the micro. Get to know every tree, side canyon, stream and wash. One can get happily lost in a micro environment close to home that beckons frequent visits.

That’s exactly it, well said Nick.  I know I’m preaching to the choir with you as you’re a big fan of somewhat obscure or unknown hiking areas, many within range of areas that are otherwise overcrowded.  To do this I believe it definitely takes an appreciation for the “micro” and a willingness to see the landscape on its own terms, not comparing it to “bigger” or “grander” places. Because it’s all good when you know how to look at it.

I’ve really enjoyed exploring the San Gabriels more to the west of where I am. I love the availability of stoves and fire rings. Lots of good trailcamps around there.
