Southern compass for global travel?

Hi,

based of Roger Caffin’s comment here (https://bushwalkingnsw.org.au/clubsites/FAQ/FAQ_Navigation.htm) compasses calibrate for the Southern hemisphere sold in Australia can be used ‘globally’.  The only global compasses advertised as ‘global’ are Suunto (which I’d love to love, but the manufacturing quality has gone down massively), or from Brunton (which I find poorly designed as a compass to start with).  Hence I was wondering whether just getting a different brand, calibrated for the Southern hemisphere compass would give me a decent ‘global’ compass.

I’ve owned my Suunto MC-2 (not global) for a few years now and don’t agree about poor manufacturing quality, unless something has changed since I purchased it.

Buy a new one and then tell me.  The bezel has a play, the markings on the baseplate are painted and not etched.  I sent mine to be swapped under warranty because of how much play the bezel has (and to be fair to Suunto they have a first class customer service), and the new one had the rubber feet at different heights.  The global needle is *amazing* but the implementation of all the rest leaves a lot to be desired.
