In response to Andrew Skurka’s blog posts about Showa’s 281 and 282 model “Temres” WPB gloves, meant for working on fishing boats but pretty great for backpacking, except for being Smurf-blue, Showa released two black-colored variations of their 282 (insulated) model, which I believe are denoted 282-01 and 282-02.

This was a while back, but I can’t find a source outside Japan for either model. Anyone have any luck?

They( LFS Marine & Outdoor who usually carries most of their gloves and was supposed to carry the 282-02 starting in August, located where I live here in Seattle ) may be having a problem getting them from Japan, Japan is not shipping to the US because of covid 19. I had ordered something from Japan a couple of months ago and was informed by the company that they were not allowed to ship to the US during covid and that they would email me when they could resume. I saw a post here on BPL yesterday that Montbell Japan is not shipping to the US again because of covid.

I live in Seattle too.  Have you reached out to Seattle Marine & Fishing Supply?

I get my Showa gloves from there.  I don’t know if they have the black colored gloves you’re looking for.

Not sure what an importer in US will charge for these but here in Japan the black version of the 282 is 2x-3x more expensive, e.g. $7-10 vs $20-$28, while the cuffed 282-02 is ~$40. IMO, the reason the unlined 281 became popular here with winter sports users is because its cheap, ~$4, making it practically disposable when it eventually tears. It’s just a work glove, and really not much different from plain dishwashing gloves.

Exactly why I bought a couple pairs (blue 281) to wear in persistent cold rain layered over a pair of liner gloves – I size up to fit comfortably over the liners. I much prefer to use a liner with the 281 gloves rather than the 282 which come with a liner of some kind. They lasted me a couple years of use in the rain on several hikes.

Seattle Marine, mentioned above has the blue 281 gloves for $10.46 a pair.

I’m no not sure they carry the 281 in black but I didn’t bother looking. It might be worth a phone call if one’s interested.

I ordered a pair from go2marine and they came in less than a week.

They’re pretty cool, with a cinch wrist rather than the kind of baggy gauntlet on the old blue ones. About the same as far as warmth goes,. which is to say kind of middle-of-the-road.

Thanks for the link to the black ones Tjaard! I just ordered a pair.

I’ve been using the blue 282s this year and like them quite a bit. They are very durable and I can plunge my hands into streams and such with no worries, which is quite a luxury. Like all gloves, they have a narrow range of comfortable temps, but in terms of breathability I don’t think they are much worse than Gore-tex and Outdry gloves I have. I actually think a mitt in the WPB Temres fabric would be where it’s at. Doubt they would ever make one.

Adventure Alan also tempted me to impulse buy a pair from Go2Marine. I ordered the XL and they fit my mitts just about right, nice and comfy too. They have these sweet cordlocks from Nifco, does anyone know of a source for this brand of hardware? Much slicker than most standard cordlocks.

Ditto…….just got my black XL too.  They fit my hands great.  The insulation seems to be around a fleece 150.  My opinion.
