Two of my stoves failed, non catastrophically

Soto Windmaster:

The part of the arm that’s over the flame has been melted and turned to ash.  Enough remains it still works.  I think I’ll just ignore this.  Probably doesn’t make any difference.  Maybe some day my pot will be heating along and suddenly collapse.

And then my MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe piezo ignitor sometimes doesn’t work.

If you unscrew the head, pull it off, then carefully put it back with the tube over the wire from the piezo, then it started working again.

Except another time that didn’t work.  Piezo failed to ignite.  No big deal, I used lighter.  Then, the next time it started working again.

I have heard other people report this failure also, piezo unreliable on Pocket Rocket Deluxe

I have also heard this complaint about piezos in general, they eventually fail, don’t bother with them.  Maybe this MSR stove experience confirms that, but it’s sure convenient when it works.

The piezo on the Soto works reliably.

My MSR pocket rocket deluxe piezo igniter worked initially on its first trip, then it stopped working for several trips, than it came back and I’m on a 3 trip winning streak.

I own a couple of canisters stoves and intentionally did not buy the optional and more expensive piezo version. I can easily light a stove with a BIC, fire steel, or even a match — none of which have ever failed me.

I have the Deluxe PR, although I didn’t buy it for the igniter.  I bought it for its superb performance in the wind (as compared to other canister stoves in the same class).

2 months ago I purchased both of those stoves to test the micro regulator feature in conjunction with small canisters of propane. The PR failed right out of the box, threads were bad, could not get it to screw onto the canisters.

The arm on the Windmaster pot support is of a bit more concern than a piezo failing to spark.  I have a Windmaster, and the arms are discolored a bit but nowhere near being burnt to a crisp like yours, Jerry.  Do you run it super hot?  At least you can buy a new pot support for it.

Ironically, the only stove I’ve had with a piezo that hasn’t failed is the Windmaster!  Go figure.

I used it for about 6 years.  70 days per year.  So, 420 days.

Maybe thats an acceptable lifetime.  I could be able to use it a lot more before it really fails.

I usually run it at less than full.

Ive used the msr stove for more like 1 year.
